Just as with any job, you need to have the right tools in order to complete it.
That goes for training your dog as well. Using the proper dog training supplies
is a good start to obtaining the results you are looking for.
Crates
Dogs, as den animals, like to have a safe, enclosed place to sleep. Providing
him with a crate gives him that den feeling so he feels like he has a special
safe place. It is also a good tool to help you with training. Unfortunately, we
can't be watching our dog/puppy all the time. To stay consistent with all of
your dog training, you need to catch him in the act every time so you can give him
the correction for the bad behavior when he does it. That is why crate training
your dog is beneficial. When you can't be watching him, put him in his
crate until you can be.
There are a couple of different types of crates that you can get. There are wire
crates and there are plastic crates. Which one you choose, really is a personal
preference. The wire crates are usually collapsible which makes them easy to
pack and take with you on a road trip. The plastic crates give more privacy, and
if you are a person who travels by plane and you wish to take your pet along
with you, the plastic crate is the one you need. You should also make sure that
you get the right size crate. Obviously, you don't want one that is too small,
but getting one that is too large, isn't a good idea either. If you get one that
is too large, your dog is likely to eliminate in the unused space of the crate.
So if you have a puppy who is going to grow to be a big dog, you can still get a
large size crate, but put a divider in the crate to keep the space just big
enough for your pup to stand up and turn around.

Collars
Next on the list are collars. Yes, I do mean more than one. There are regular
every day kinds of collars, and then there are dog training collars. The collar
you choose for
your dog to wear on a daily basis is completely up to you. My preference is the
nylon collar because it comes in many different colors and sizes, they are
adjustable, durable, and they are very easy to get on and off.
Adjustable Nylon Dog Collars
Training collars are also a personal preference, but again there are different
types that will do different things. Not all dogs require the use of a special
training collar, so I would suggest doing without one first to see how your dog
responds to you.
The prong or pinch collar looks like it is
some kind of torture device, but really it is not. This collar has prongs around
it and what it does, when used correctly, is mimics a mother dog's bite. When a
mother dog is correcting her pups bad behavior, she give them a little nip, and
the prong collar was designed to copy that same correction.
Electric dog training collars are another way to go. There are different types of
electric
collars for different types of training as well. Ones that will give a shock at
the push of a button to issue a correction, or a beep. There are also bark
collars that will either give a shock or spray a mist of an irritating smell
when the dog barks.

You are the best judge as to which collars will work best for you. However, it
is important to remember that training collars are to be used strictly for
training. If the training session is complete, the training collar must come
off. Training collars are not meant to be worn all the time because they can
cause some serious injuries to your dog.
Leads
When it comes to dog training leads, I think having 2 is a good idea for that, especially if
you are wanting to do a little off leash training. If you want to train your dog
to walk off leash, it is a good idea to have a 30' lead. The extra length gives
him the feeling of having freedom. If a dog feels like he have freedom, he will
want to run anywhere and everywhere. But with the extra line, you can still make
sure that he will come back to you when you call him. Soon, you will begin to
feel confident that you can take him to the off leash park and not worry about
him running away.

Bite Protection
If you are thinking about schutzhund or guard dog training, then having some
kind of protection from dog bites would be quite beneficial. Your training
partner will be very appreciative to have something to save him from the wrath
of an angry, dog attacking. A full bite suit will cover your entire body with
the exception of your head. There is also a bite sleeve which can use to cover
your arm or even a leg, depending on what you are going to use to protect
yourself from the attacking dog.
